"Wish You Were Hither" is a song by English language stone ring Pink Floyd. It was released as the title track of their 1975 album of the same name.[2] [three] David Gilmour and Roger Waters collaborated to write the music, and Gilmour sang the lead song.

In 2021, the song was ranked No. 302 on Rolling Rock'due south 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[four]

The song is popular on Classic rock radio stations. For example, it was voted the #20 all-time vocal of all time by listeners of NYC'due south Q104.3 in 2020.[five] [half dozen]

Composition [edit]

In the original album version, the song segues from "Have a Cigar" as if a radio had been tuned away from one station, through several others (including a radio play and one playing the opening of the finale movement of Tchaikovsky'due south 4th Symphony), and finally to a new station where "Wish You Were Here" is beginning.[vii] The radio was recorded from Gilmour's automobile radio. He performed the intro on a twelve-string guitar, candy to sound similar it was playing through an AM radio, and then overdubbed a fuller-sounding audio-visual guitar solo. This passage was mixed to sound as though a guitarist were listening to the radio and playing forth. As the acoustic part becomes more complex, the 'radio broadcast' fades away and Gilmour's vocalization enters, while the remainder of the ring joins in.[8]

The intro riff is repeated several times before Gilmour plays further solos with scat singing accompaniment. A tertiary poesy follows, featuring an increasingly expressive vocal from Gilmour and audible backing vocals. At the end of the recorded vocal, the final solo crossfades with wind sound effects, and finally segues into the second section of the multi-role suite "Polish On You lot Crazy Diamond".

Lyrically, the song is ofttimes considered to be a direct tribute to Syd Barrett. However, on the documentary The Story of Wish You Were Here, Gilmour and Waters separately depict the original concept that differs from this interpretation. Waters, who mainly wrote the lyrics complementing Gilmour's initial riff thought and subsequent joint composition, describes the lyrics as being directed at himself, as his lyrics often are. Being present in one's own life and freeing one's self in social club to truly experience life is a main topic in this song. Gilmour, on the other hand, recognizes that he does not always perform the song without remembering Syd Barrett. Waters later adds that the vocal is nevertheless open up to interpretation.[9]

Both David Gilmour and Roger Waters take praised the song as one of Pink Floyd'south finest. Roger Waters has noted that the collaboration between himself and David Gilmour on the song was "actually proficient. All bits of it are really, really good. I'thousand very happy about it."[10] David Gilmour has playfully called "Wish Y'all Were Here" "a very simple country song" and stated that "because of its resonance and the emotional weight information technology carries, information technology is ane of our best songs."[11]

Recording [edit]

"Wish Yous Were Hither" was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, as part of the sessions for the unabridged anthology.

A noted part of the song was a planned contribution by Stéphane Grappelli. A jazz violinist popular at the fourth dimension and well known for his collaborations with Yehudi Menuhin, both violinists were recording in a downstairs studio at Abbey Route at the time. Gilmour had suggested that there be a footling "country fiddle" at the finish of the song and invited them to participate. Grappelli duly obliged (Menuhin declined) on arranging a session fee of £300, equivalent to £2,600 in 2022.[12] Ultimately during mixing information technology was decided to virtually remove his contribution, although information technology can but exist heard around 5:21. According to Waters information technology was decided that it would be insulting to credit Grappelli in the sleeve notes for something so inaudible, although he did receive the agreed-upon fee.[xiii] [14] [15]

In the introduction, Gilmour can be heard cough followed by some breathing right earlier the principal guitar comes in. Fable has it that he could not hold in the coughing due to his heavy smoking at the time. When he heard the final take, he was so disappointed, he quit smoking cold turkey the following day.[16]

As part of the Why Pinkish Floyd...? entrada, the Experience and Immersion versions of the Wish You Were Here album include an culling version of the vocal where Grappelli'south part is heard in the instrumental break later the 2d verse and throughout the 3rd poetry earlier a considerably extended outro. Other less obvious differences are audible, for example at the section leading into the 2nd verse.

The primary tape of the original recording includes guitar solos that were non used in the final mix.[ commendation needed ]

Live performances [edit]

"Wish You Were Here" made its phase debut on the ring'southward 1977 tour, which featured a performance of the entire anthology at every show. It was non played alive by the band for nearly 10 years after this, withal became a concert staple after its reappearance in 1987, and was performed at almost all subsequent Pink Floyd concerts. In the original 1977 concert performances, Gilmour would play his Fender Stratocaster instead of acoustic guitar, while Snowy White played a twelve-string Ovation acoustic guitar. At these shows, Nick Mason tuned an bodily transistor radio on stage to a local radio station, seguing into the pre-recorded part from the anthology to start the song and Richard Wright would perform an extended piano coda as the wind furnishings played. Roger Waters provided backing vocals for the final verse. A live version is included on Pulse, arranged more than closely to the original album version, with Gilmour playing a Gibson J-200 acoustic guitar and the twelve-string function supplied by touring guitarist Tim Renwick. When Pinkish Floyd were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,[17] Gilmour and Wright (Mason was in the audience) performed the song with the aid of their presenter Baton Corgan on rhythm guitar.

Gilmour has made the song a function of most of his tours, and included alive versions on his Alive in Gdansk and Live at Pompeii albums.

With the exception of The Wall Live, Waters has performed the vocal on every one of his tours as a solo deed; information technology is i of merely a handful of Pink Floyd songs (including "Time" and "Welcome to the Automobile") where Waters sings pb vocals formerly sung past Gilmour himself rather than delegating them to a fellow member of his touring band. Live versions were released on Waters' live albums and concert films In the Mankind – Live in 2000 and Roger Waters: Usa + Them in 2019.

In 2005, Waters and Eric Clapton performed the song at the Tsunami Aid concert, and in 2005'due south Live 8, Waters rejoined his former bandmates in London to perform it, along with four other archetype Pink Floyd songs. Waters and Gilmour shared lead vocals. [18] [19]

On 13 December 2014 David Gilmour was a guest performer at a concert by the Mumbai Bicycle Gild at Earls Courtroom Arena, their concert being the terminal upshot ever to have place in that location before its demolition. Ring member Jamie MacColl introduced Gilmour, saying; "This man gave me my first guitar and was 1 of the first people to play this venue and by my count has played hither more than 27 times." Gilmour then played with the band on their song "Rinse Me Down" before a performance of "Wish You lot Were Here".[20]

Other recorded versions past Pink Floyd [edit]

"Wish You Were Here" appeared equally the fifth track on A Collection of Nifty Trip the light fantastic Songs in 1981 (with the radio intro following the end of a heavily edited "Smoothen On Y'all Crazy Diamond") and equally the 23rd track on the Echoes compilation[21] in 2001 (with the radio intro following "Arnold Layne", and at the stop crossfading with "Jugband Blues").

A live recording included on the 1995 alive album Pulse was issued as a unmarried/EP. Its intro replicates the sound of the original, semi-ambient intro. The cover of the EP features two men whose faces are distorted by fish bowls, referring to the line "We're just two lost souls pond in a fish bowl, year afterwards year".

The Experience edition of Wish You Were Here from the 2011 Why Pinkish Floyd...? re-release campaign includes a version of "Wish You lot Were Here" featuring Stéphane Grappelli on violin much more than prominently. The recording of Grappelli, which Nick Mason had thought he might take recorded over in subsequent sessions for "Wish You Were Here", was uncovered in the EMI vaults during re-mastering work for the Why Pinkish Floyd...? entrada.[22] Mason discussed the alternative version on the BBC Radio 4 Front Row plan, and revealed that Yehudi Menuhin, who was recording with Grappelli in Abbey Road's Studio Two, was also invited to play on "Wish You Were Here" but declined, equally he was not as comfy as Grappelli at improvising.[23]
